Today marks the third anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed around 250,000 lives. In Thailand, over 5,000 people died along the Andaman coast. With participation from tourists and locals, Thailand recently carried out tsunami evacuation drills to test escape routes and warning systems. The television pictures of masses of sun-seekers panting and sweating as they ran along in the heat did look bizarre. However, nobody in the region needs to be reminded why such measures are necessary.

The Asian tsunami on December 26th 2004 claimed over 250,000 lives. In Thailand, over 5,000 people were killed. Nobody who experienced it in person or who watched the news coverage will forget the events of that day.
