The Thai government has approved an extra day’s holiday for next year’s Songkran New Year Festival. Also known as Thailand’s Water Festival, Songkran is usually an official public holiday from April 13-15. Today’s news means that Friday April 16, 2010 will be an additional public holiday in Thailand.
The pre- and post-Songkran period is the busiest time of year for domestic travel in Thailand with buses and trains often booked well in advance. The holiday is a lot of fun and a chance for everybody to let their hair down and relax during the hot season. Sadly, it’s also the most dangerous time on Thailand’s roads with drink-driving and reckless behaviour a perennial problem.
In addition to approving the extra day for Songkran, the government confirmed that Friday August 13, 2010 would also be a holiday. This makes it a long weekend break in Thailand because August 12 is observed annually as a public holiday for H.M. Queen Sirikit’s birthday, a date which also marks Mother’s Day because Thailand’s queen is regarded fondly as the Mother of the Nation.
