Anti-government protests resulted in the closure this afternoon of three airports in the south of Thailand: Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai. Security has been stepped up at Bangkok and Chiang Mai airports to prevent a repetition of the scenes in the south which has resulted in passengers being stranded as some flights were cancelled. In Phuket, protest leaders agreed to allow access for stranded foreign tourists so that they could board a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok this evening. To add to travellers’ woes, the union which represents Thai Airways workers has told its members that they can take sick leave to support the anti-government protests. Railway workers have already undergone similar action which has halted rail travel in Thailand.
