Anti-Coup Demonstrations in Bangkok

Over the past week a number of anti-coup demonstrations have taken place in Bangkok as protesters voice their displeasure at Thailand’s current political scene. Last night, this culminated in a gathering of an estimated 10-15,000 people at Sanam Luang opposite the Grand Palace. Sanam Luang is a large expanse of open land that has traditionally been used over the years for demonstrations and parades.

For the foreign visitor, I don’t think there is anything to fear as the night-time protest was largely peaceful. In fact, it’s likely that most tourists in the nearby backpacker area of Khao San Road were completely oblivious to what was going on.

If you are in Bangkok at the moment or have friends and family there, I wouldn’t be alarmed. These demonstrations come as no surprise and they are likely to continue in the coming weeks and months. It’s very much an internal issue and the best advice for visitors would be to keep away from any demonstrations or marches. It’s quite possible that at some stage there will be violence from either the protesters or the police as tempers flare. Don’t believe anybody who tells you that Thai people never lose their temper!

It’s still safe to visit Bangkok and the Grand Palace and many people continue to do so completely unaware of the Thai political shenanigans.
