The red-shirted anti-government protesters have rejected the offer of talks with the Thai government. Representing the protesters, Jatuporn Prompan said, ‘The situation is now beyond negotiation . . . Our objective is to remove them (the Thai government). Why would we talk to them?’

Yesterday, the Thai government said they would be prepared to talk with Thaksin Shinawatra, the exiled figurehead of the red-shirts. Thaksin has been ratcheting up the pressure on the Thai government in recent weeks and pro-Thaksin supporters have responded to his call by taking to the streets in various regional protests throughout Thailand. Large numbers of Thaksin supporters are expected to travel from the provinces to attend another mass rally in Bangkok next week.

Prime Minister Abhisit is due to return to Thailand tomorrow after attending the G20 Summit in London where he has been representing the ASEAN group of nations in his capacity as chairman. Abhisit’s return is a day earlier than scheduled, but his office are downplaying suggestions that the Thai prime minister is worried by the protests.
