In a statement issued by the Royal Household Bureau, it has been confirmed that His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has undergone a lumbar puncture procedure (also known as a spinal tap). Thailand’s 83-year-old monarch has recently been suffering from unsteadiness when walking and last night’s surgical procedure was to drain the excess fluid in the spine which has been causing this.
The health of the Thai king is always a matter of national concern, but in recent years His Majesty has suffered from various health problems. In September 2009, the king was admitted to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok after developing a fever and lung inflammation. Although he recovered from the original infection, King Bhumibol has continued to spend time in hospital to convalesce. During this time, public appearances by His Majesty have been rare.
Having acceded to the Thai throne in 1946, King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the world’s longest reigning monarch.
