Bangkok Awaits Mass Rally

On the eve of a mass anti-government rally in Bangkok, Thai prime minister Abhisit has said that there is no need to issue emergency decrees to deal with any potential trouble. Organizers of the rally suggest over 300,000 red-shirted protesters could be on the streets around Government House and there are fears that the situation could become volatile. The protesters hope that the planned 3-day rally will bring about the downfall of the current government before the start of the Songkran holiday period.

The Thai government has already been forced to re-arrange events because of the red-shirt protests. The recent ASEAN summit was moved to Hua Hin and a follow-up meeting to the ASEAN summit is scheduled for Pattaya this weekend. Today’s cabinet meeting also takes place in Pattaya with the government saying this was always the plan and has nothing to do with the recent protests around Government House in Bangkok which forced the cancellation of last week’s cabinet meeting.
