Bangkok Clashes Leave One Dead and Dozens Injured

The sight that many in Thailand had been fearing, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning as pro-government and anti-government supporters clashed near Government House in Bangkok. In the violence that erupted following taunts and the throwing of missiles, one person has died and dozens have been injured. Thai medical services have confirmed that one man has died from severe head injuries and four others are in a serious condition of which two have suffered gunshot wounds.

Pro-government supporters had begun to gather during the evening at Sanam Luang, the large expanse of open ground close to the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The group made their way to the site of the anti-government protest where police were unable to prevent the two opposing factions from clashing. With the army already on standby, 400 soldiers were called in to restore order and break-up the fighting. Many Thai people will have been unaware of the violence that has occurred in the early hours and will be waking up to this news. As the day progresses the tension and anger on both sides will mount as people witness the graphic images. The police are sure to come in for more criticism for not preventing the bloodshed and the army may finally be forced to play a more active role.
