Bangkok Ends State of Emergency

Thailand’s caretaker government has lifted the state of emergency in Bangkok. In a statement made on Sunday, acting prime minister Somchai Wongsawat confirmed the ending of the state of emergency declaring that the political situation was now under control.

Former leader Samak Sundaravej was disqualified from office last week, but despite this there was a strong possibility that he was going to be voted in again as prime minister. However, Samak has reluctantly accepted his fate and parliament are due to decide on a new prime minister this week. The protesters at Government House haven’t dispersed yet, but with Samak now gone it is hoped that they will end their protests very soon.

For tourists in Bangkok it has more or less been business as usual for the last fortnight, but the lifting of the emergency status will be a welcome boost to Thailand’s tourist industry. The political turmoil is sure to have a few more twists and turns, but hopefully we’ve seen the end of the demonstrations which disrupted rail and air travel within Thailand.
