Bangkok Police on Alert for Red Shirt Rally
Around 10,000 police, soldiers and security officials have been deployed around Government House in Bangkok ahead of today’s mass rally by anti-government protesters. The rally by the so-called red shirts has been organized by the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD). The UDD insist the protest will be peaceful and will respect the law, but also stress that the protests will continue until Prime Minister Abhisit resigns.
The leaders of the UDD have accused the government of deliberately obstructing some protesters from travelling to Bangkok. The UDD say that some of their supporters are being blocked from boarding trains and buses in some provinces such as Khon Kaen in the north-east of Thailand. The north-east area of Thailand, known as Isaan, has traditionally been a source of popular support for former Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. Deposed leader Thaksin, currently in exile, is scheduled to address the rally at 7 pm local time via a phone link.
