Cause of Phi Phi Deaths Still Not Clear
Thai authorities are still investigating the recent deaths of two women on the Thai island of Phi Phi. Jill St. Onge, aged 27 from the USA, died after being admitted to hospital following severe vomiting. Julie Michelle Bergheim, aged 22 from Norway, died in similar circumstances. Initial reports suggested the deaths were caused by poisoning as a result of consuming food or drink, but the boyfriend of one of the dead women is suggesting another possible cause. Ryan Kells was engaged to Jill and the couple had been travelling around Asia together. Writing on a travel forum, Ryan believes the tragedy could have been a result of some chemical seeping into their guest-house room, possibly from a nearby water treatment plant. The victims had been staying at the Leelana guest-house on Ko Phi Phi.
Police and medical investigations are still ongoing and could take a number of weeks before a conclusion is drawn. Meanwhile, Thai authorities are liaising with Norwegian and American embassy officials.
