Explosion at Yellow Shirt Rally

At least five people were injured this evening by an explosion at a political rally in Bangkok. Local reports say a device exploded close to the stage where prominent leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) were addressing the crowd. The rally continued despite the incident, with the wounded people taken to hospital for treatment.

PAD, a staunchly nationalist and royalist movement, are also known as the yellow shirts. Today’s rally was organized as a protest against Thaksin Shinawatra and the Cambodian government who recently appointed the fugitive former Thai prime minister as an economic adviser. Thaksin, who has spent much of his recent time in the Middle East, has now left Cambodia for an undisclosed destination. The appearance of Thaksin in neighbouring Cambodia had encouraged the pro-Thaksin red shirts and infuriated the yellow shirts.
