Explosive Devices Fuel Political Tension in Bangkok

Yesterday morning, police bomb disposal experts safely defused a device which was found within the compound of the Supreme Court in Bangkok. Meanwhile, late on Sunday evening a grenade exploded close to Government House. Nobody was injured by the grenade, but some parked cars were damaged by the device which landed within the grounds of Rajamankla University.

Later this month the Supreme Court is scheduled to announce a verdict in the Thaksin Shinawatra asset case. There have been concerns in Thailand that supporters of Thaksin, known as the red shirts, will try to create political turmoil during this month in an attempt to force the current government from office. The red shirts have said they will only use peaceful means and there are sure to be allegations and counter allegations about who was responsible for yesterday’s incidents.
