Full Moon Party Boat Accident

Two speedboats collided in the Gulf of Thailand last night with local reports stating that at least 39 people have been injured and 2 people are missing. The incident occurred off the coast of Ko Samui as the boats carrying tourists travelled to and from the famous Full Moon Party on the neighbouring island of Ko Pha Ngan.

There was a storm in the area last night and boat services between Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan were temporarily suspended. Following an improvement in the weather conditions, boat services resumed and it appears that it was at this point when the accident occurred.

Sadly, boat accidents in Thailand are not uncommon. In the past, private boat operators running the service between Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan have come in for specific criticism for overcrowding the speedboats and not providing enough life-jackets. However, there is no indication at this stage that the boats involved in this accident were overcrowded.
