The body of a female German tourist was discovered yesterday on the island of Ko Pha Ngan. It is being reported that Astrid Al-Assaad-Schachner, aged 45, was strangled to death. The deceased was a regular visitor to Ko Pha Ngan where she spent extended vacations. Local police have already arrested a Thai man who works on the island and is known to be an acquaintance of the dead tourist. Police say that in his confession the suspect said, “She had humiliated me. She often told other foreigners that I fell for her and tried to rape her several times, which is not true.”
Although some international media sites have been quick to link the murder with the Full Moon Party which was held on Ko Pha Ngan at the weekend, it should be pointed out that the two events are not necessarily linked and at the time of writing there is no evidence that either the victim or the accused spent time at the Full Moon Party.
Ko Pha Ngan is famous, some would say infamous, for the Full Moon Party, which attracts revellers from around the world drawn in by the 24-hour beach party of dancing and drinking. Despite police crackdowns, drugs still feature at the Full Moon Party which has been blighted in the past by criminal activity ranging from robbery to rape and murder.
