Gunmen Attack Yellow Shirt Leader
Thailand’s political chaos took a new twist in Bangkok this morning. The car of media tycoon, Sondhi Limthongkul, was attacked by gunmen in a dramatic pre-dawn shooting in the Thai capital. Remarkably, the three occupants of the car (Sondhi, his driver and his bodyguard) all survived the attack which saw approximately one hundred shots fired at the vehicle. Sondhi had surgery to remove a bullet fragment which was dangerously close to entering his brain, but his condition is no longer described as critical.
Sondhi is one of the main leaders of the so-called ‘yellow shirts’. The yellow shirts occupied airports in Thailand last year and are opponents of Thaksin Shinawatra and the red shirts. Sondhi is a former friend and ally of deposed prime minister Thaksin, but the two men fell out over a business deal and Sondhi then went on to form the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the group who were the catalyst for the military coup which ousted Thaksin from power in 2006.
