A renegade army general who has been supporting the anti-government protesters has been shot this evening as Thai security forces moved to surround the site of the red shirt encampment in the Siam area of Bangkok. There are conflicting reports about whether Major General Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as Seh Daeng, is still alive or not following the shooting. At the time of writing, some local media reports are saying Seh Daeng was shot in the head and is in a coma. It’s not yet clear who has carried out the shooting, but it comes at a time when the Thai army had moved snipers into the area and the government had talked about the need to deal with the terrorists within the red shirt movement.
Earlier in the week, the Thai prime minister had publicly described Seh Daeng as a terrorist and a threat to national reconciliation. Viewed as a friend and an ally of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, the renegade army man has been an adviser to the militant faction of the red shirt movement. It should also be noted that the more moderate red shirt leaders had distanced themselves from Seh Daeng and his methods. Thai security officials had previously linked Seh Daeng and his supporters with a number of grenade attacks and he has also been implicated in the violence and killings in Bangkok on April 10.
