More Tension on Thai-Cambodia Border
The long-running issue of the Preah Vihear temple dispute has surfaced again with Cambodia alleging that Thai troops entered Cambodian territory. Thailand has denied the allegation.
There have been accusations in the past that various political groups in Thailand have used the Preah Vihear issue to raise nationalist sentiment and gain popular support. There have also been similar accusations that Cambodia has used the border dispute to manipulate the political divide in Thailand. Whatever the true story is, the territorial dispute has simmered away quietly since it last made headlines in October 2008 when shots were exchanged between Thai and Cambodian troops.
