The Thai parliament has today voted in Somchai Wongsawat as the new prime minister. Somchai takes over from Samak Sundaravej who was disqualified from office following a conflict of interests concerning the monies he received from two television shows. Although anti-government demonstrators briefly celebrated when Samak was forced out of office, the announcement of the new prime minister will certainly not make them happy. Somchai is the brother-in-law of Thaksin Shinawatra and this will fuel further suspicion and mistrust amongst opponents of the government.
