Phuket Airport Still Closed but Krabi and Hat Yai Re-Open
The airports at Krabi and Hat Yai have re-opened following talks between protesters and airport officials, but the airport at Phuket remains closed at the time of writing. It was hoped that Phuket airport would re-open at 18.00 local time today (Saturday) but it is still unclear whether that actually will happen or indeed whether the airport will be open tomorrow (Sunday).
International passengers scheduled to arrive in Phuket yesterday on flights from Australia were diverted to Bangkok and put up in hotels in the Thai capital. The protest in Phuket is just at the airport and nowhere else on the island which remains safe to visit if you can get there. Buses to and from Phuket have seen increases in the number of passengers as people look for alternative ways to get on and off the island. With such a popular tourist gateway affected this will bring a lot of publicity to the anti-government PAD group and cause yet more embarrassment for the government.
Update Sunday Augsut 31st: Phuket and Krabi airports are now open again.
Update Thursday September 4th: All Thai airports are currently open.
