Prime Minister Back in Thailand to Face Crisis

Thai prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, has arrived back in Thailand following the APEC summit in Peru. His flight is reported to have arrived at Chiang Mai, a northern city and province which remains a stronghold of support for the current government as well as former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra. Large numbers of pro-government supporters wearing red shirts are at Chiang Mai’s airport to deter any potential anti-government protests there along the lines of those witnessed in Bangkok.

Thailand hosts the forthcoming ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) summit in December which has now been transferred to Chiang Mai from Bangkok.
