Protesters to Vacate Government House
The anti-government PAD (People’s Alliance for Democracy) protesters have announced they will leave the grounds of Government House in Bangkok. They have occupied the complex since August, forcing the government to carry on its business elsewhere. On the face of it this could be seen as good news, however it seems the protesters will now be focusing their attention on reinforcing their position at Bangkok’s airports. Ironically, the PAD protesters claim they weren’t getting enough protection from police. This comes at a time when pro-government supporters in Bangkok are beginning to rally in opposition to the PAD group and attacks have been launched against the PAD group who were illegally encamped at Government House.
There is still no clear sign when the airport protests will end, but with the upcoming decision from the Constitution Court and His Majesty the King’s birthday, the outcome could become clearer very soon. There are tens of thousands of tourists fed up with this situation, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that there are millions of ordinary Thai people even more frustrated, angry and ashamed about the damage done to Thailand. Long after the tourists have gone it will be the ordinary Thai people left to pick up the pieces with jobs and livelihoods lost.
