Leaders of the anti-government rally in Bangkok have announced that protesters have been donating blood in preparation for a symbolic gesture of sacrifice. If Thailand’s prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva does not dissolve parliament and call fresh elections, rally organisers say that the blood collected will be thrown on the floor at the entrance to Government House. One red shirt leader said, ‘If Abhisit is still stubborn, even though he does not have blood on his hands, his feet will be bloodied with our curses.’
Concerns have been raised about the hygiene situation and the physical welfare of those donating blood. One of the rally leaders, Dr Weng Tojilakarnod, played down concerns expressed by health officials and the Thai Red Cross. Dr Weng, who runs his own medical practice, said, ‘All people who conduct the blood drawing will be doctors, nurses or other qualified people who came here voluntarily’.
Update:
This afternoon, a group of anti-government protesters were allowed through a police cordon to perform the ‘blood curse ritual’ outside the gates of Government House. This followed talks between red shirt leaders and police. After the ritual, the area where the ceremony took place was cleaned and disinfected by officials. Not all of the collected blood was used and similar blood cursing rituals are set to take place outside the entrances to other key locations associated with the government. These include the headquarters of the Democrat Party as well as the residence of Thailand’s prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva.
