Anti-government protesters are continuing their action outside Government House in Bangkok. The main rally last week was attended by tens of thousands of red-shirted demonstrators and although most of the crowd have since dispersed, a few thousand remain for the sixth consecutive day. Yesterday, there were also numerous anti-government protests in a number of regions throughout Thailand.
Prime Minister Abhisit insists he is not worried by the protests, but he must be feeling some unease as he departs for the G20 Summit in London. With Thaksin Shinawatra playing a pivotal role in rallying the red-shirts, the Thai government seem to be stepping up the process to try and get him extradited back to Thailand. Since the United Kingdom revoked Thaksin’s visa, it is believed that the former Thai leader has been using Hong Kong and Dubai as a base. In October 2008 Thaksin was found guilty on corruption charges and faces prison if he returns to Thailand.
