Tanks on Streets of Bangkok

Tanks have been deployed on the streets of Bangkok following the declaration of the state of emergency in the Thai capital. Although the situation sounds tense, there is no sign of confrontation between the red-shirted protesters and the soldiers. So far, it’s all sanuk with local television news showing coverage of red shirts climbing onto tanks waving Thai flags and waiing the soldiers. The continuing non-confrontational approach by the military is not a surprise. Partly, it shows that the current government does not have the full support of the military or the police, but there are also historical reasons. In the 1970’s and 1990’s, there was outrage when unarmed anti-government protesters were killed when troops opened fire.

Thailand is still a relatively young democracy and has gone through very public growing pains in recent years. The sight of tanks on the streets has been a part of that process, but there is still no reason for anybody visiting Bangkok or Thailand to panic. Rumours of a coup are beginning to grow and the next 24 hours could be crucial for the future of Prime Minsiter Abhisit. However, foreign visitors are not currently in danger and there is no need to lock yourself in your hotel room, but at the same time you should be sensible and keep yourself informed.
