Thai Airways Flights Threatened by Strike Action

With continuing protests in Thailand, there are local reports suggesting that labour unions have agreed to stage more strikes beginning tomorrow (Wednesday). Many labour unions are supporting the anti-government PAD demonstrations and the news of more strike action follows the recent walkouts and protests which hit Thailand’s rail and air transport. If the strikes do go ahead, the Bangkok Post are reporting that Thai Airways international flights could be subject to delay and cancellation. Buses in Bangkok may not run and certain government authorities could have their electricity supply cut if the union leaders carry out the threat. On a positive note, rail services resumed in most areas last night following the recent suspension.

There is a distinct increase in tension on the political front and this week could prove to be decisive one way or another for PM Samak and his government.

Update Thursday September 4th: The strikes failed to materialize and there was virtually no effect on Thai Airways flights. Currently all airports are open in Thailand including Hat Yai which re-opened today.
