The chief of Thailand’s army, General Anupong Paochinda, has called for dissolution of parliament as the way forward during the current political crisis in Thailand. General Anupong said that the problem is a political one and should be resolved by politics and not the army.
The red shirts have been demanding that the Thai prime minister dissolves parliament and calls fresh elections. Following the violence in Bangkok on Saturday, there are reports that junior parties in the coalition government are now considering early elections as the best way out of the crisis. However, prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has denied reports of rifts and has said that the government and military remain unified. Abhisit has also made a television broadcast where he accused a ‘terrorist’ group of exploiting the red shirt protest and that there was a need to separate the terrorists from the innocent protesters.
Yesterday evening at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, close to the scene of the worst of Saturday’s violence, the red shirts held a ceremony to commemorate those who lost their lives. This morning, a convoy of trucks, cars and motorbikes led a parade of red-painted coffins through the streets of Bangkok. Most of the coffins were empty because the bodies of the dead are awaiting autopsies. However, it is thought that at least two coffins contained the bodies of demonstrators who were killed during the clashes on Saturday.
