Thai Army Chief Urges Government to Call New Elections

The occupation of Bangkok’s international airport could be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Although the anti-government protests have been going on since June, the situation at Bangkok airport has grabbed international headlines and will have a severely detrimental effect on Thailand’s hugely important tourist industry. Thai army chief General Anupong Paochinda is the man who holds the key at the moment. He has again said that the army will not stage a coup, but he has urged the government to call new elections. The anti-government protesters have been aiming for a coup, but this latest move to take over the airport may lose them a lot of support with Thai people who rely on the tourist industry for their livelihood.
