Thai Army Moves in on Protest Site

Just before dawn this morning, troop reinforcements and armoured vehicles arrived around the protest zone in central Bangkok. Warnings were issued via loudspeakers advising the protesters to disperse. A little while later, the protesters began to burn tyres and the bamboo barricades that the red shirts had set up at various locations around the protest zone. Thai security forces used high pressure water hoses and armoured vehicles to break through the barriers. Shots were exchanged between both sides in Lumphini Park as the army moved in to secure that key strategic location. Reporters on the ground have been talking about the ‘men in black’ within the red shirt area who were firing at the soldiers.

The government have announced they are taking ‘decisive action’. The security operation is still ongoing and may take the rest of the day. As troops secure the area and dismantle barricades they are checking for booby-traps and bombs.
