Thai PM Promises Assistance for Flood Areas
Heavy rains last week have resulted in flooding in some provinces of Thailand with homes and businesses destroyed by the flood water. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has pledged government support for the flood-hit regions and said that he and his ministers will visit the worst affected areas. Heavy rains and flooding are not unusual during the rainy season, but the remnants of Typhoon Ketsana also contributed to particularly bad weather conditions in the Isaan area of north-east Thailand with the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket suffering the most severe flood damage. The northern provinces of Lampang and Lamphun also reported flash flooding whilst the south of Thailand was affected by strong winds and heavy rain due to the south-west monsoon over the Andaman Sea.
As well as domestic aid, the Thai government has also been helping out with the international relief effort for the Philippines and Indonesia who both suffered natural disasters recently. Thailand has sent rice, medical supplies and electricity generators to her regional neighbours.
