Thai PM Rejects Red Shirt Ultimatum
Thailand’s prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has rejected the demands of the red shirt anti-government protesters in Bangkok. Speaking on national television, the Thai leader refused to buckle to protester demands that he step down and fresh elections be called. Abhisit said, ‘Elections must be held under common rules and genuine calm. We have to listen to other people’s voices, not just the protesters.’
In advance of the Bangkok protest, Abhisit had moved from Government House to an army barracks in the north of Bangkok. It was from here that the Thai leader addressed the nation as crowds of red shirt protesters gathered outside the barracks. Later, the prime minister left the barracks by helicopter for an undisclosed destination. Earlier today, at a different army base close to Victory Monument, two soldiers were injured by a grenade which was reportedly fired into the compound.
