Thai Prime Minister Offers November Election

Thailand’s prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has proposed a reconciliation ‘road-map’ to resolve the current political stand-off between the Thai government and the red shirt anti-government protesters. Speaking on live television, Abhisit said he will hold elections in November if certain conditions are met and respected. Leaders of the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) have said they will give Abhisit’s proposals serious consideration.

This is the first major sign of a breakthrough in the political crisis, but there is still no guarantee that the red shirts will agree to the prime minister’s proposals. However, the offer does provide a potential resolution and one that could be considered a good outcome for both sides.

The road-map for reconciliation outlines the following key elements:

  • All parties concerned must be united and uphold the monarchy.
  • The government recognises social and political injustices and promises national reform to address the problems. This will involve social and welfare plans to help the less well off in Thai society.
  • The Thai government also recognised the public feelings of injustice over the Thai political system and will try to resolve those issues.
  • An independent committee will investigate the deaths and injuries that have occurred as a result of the violence in Bangkok in recent weeks.
  • The media has a key role to play in disseminating information to the Thai public and needs to be honest and act responsibly.
