Thai Stock Market Plummets Amid Concerns Over King’s Health
Share prices in Thailand have fallen dramatically in the last two days with investors apparently reacting to concerns over the health of the King of Thailand. The value of the baht against the dollar has also dropped as foreign investors react nervously to speculation over the king’s condition. Over the years, the king has been seen as a stabilizing influence for Thailand as the country has lurched from one political crisis to another.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej was admitted to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok on September 19 suffering from a fever, loss of appetite and fatigue. Since his admission to hospital, the Royal Household Bureau have been issuing regular updates on the health situation of the 81-year-old monarch. The latest statements say that the king’s health is improving, but because of his age it is prudent for him to remain in hospital to facilitate a complete recovery.
Formerly a very fit and active man, the Thai king has suffered from a number of health problems in recent years. He received hospital treatment in October 2007 and again in December 2008 when he was too ill to deliver his traditional birthday speech.
