Thailand has announced that they will be resuming diplomatic relations with Cambodia. The announcement was made shortly after Cambodia confirmed that Thaksin Shinawatra had resigned his role as economic adviser to Phnom Penh. In November 2009, Cambodia’s decision to appoint the controversial Thaksin as an economic adviser led to a major diplomatic rift between Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
The news will be welcomed by moderates on both sides of the border, but there is still more work to be done before Thailand and Cambodia can reach an amicable settlement in the ongoing dispute over the Preah Vihear Temple.
