Thailand Football Association Wants England Fixture

There was a bit of confusion yesterday when the Football Association of Thailand announced it had secured a prestigious fixture against England to be played in Thailand in November 2009. Unfortunately for the Thai football (soccer) authorities, their English counterparts have not yet agreed to the match and, in fact, are unlikely to do so.

The head of the Football Association of Thailand, Worawi Makudi, presented the fixture as a done-deal after meeting with the English Football Association’s vice-chairman, Sir David Richards. However, the English F.A. were quick to play down the idea and whilst England haven’t totally rejected the possibility of a match in Thailand at some stage in the future, it is highly unlikely to be taking place at any time during 2009. It seems the confusion arose over a genuine misunderstanding but if the match ever did take place it would be fantastic for the Thai national team which is currently coached by ex-England and Everton player, Peter Reid. Domestic football in Thailand has relatively few followers, but there is massive interest in overseas football, particularly the English Premiership which also attracts plenty of Thai Baht in illegal betting activity.
