In the early hours of Wednesday January 2nd, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana lost her battle with abdominal cancer. Aged 84, Princess Galyani was the older sister of Thailand’s current monarch, King Bhumibol. Born in London on May 6th 1923, Princess Galyani had spells living in Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
Tourists already in Thailand or planning to visit within the next 2 weeks should note that there is an official mourning period of 15 days. During this time, flags at government offices and schools will be at half-mast. Many Thai people will be wearing black as a mark of respect for a lady noted for her charity work and down-to-earth nature. Festive activities may be altered or suspended during this period and some bars and clubs may temporarily close or tone down the music. However, Thai people are pragmatic. They know that there are many businesses that rely on tourist income and it will be impractical for them to close up for a fortnight.
