Thaksin Addresses Supporters
Tens of thousands of pro-government supporters gathered at Bangkok’s Rajamangkla Stadium on Saturday in a show of support for the government and former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra. In the lead up to the rally there were fears that pro- and anti-government protesters would clash violently in Bangkok. In the end, the rally passed off mainly without incident.
Despite being in exile in London and having being found guilty of corruption by the Thai Supreme Court, Thaksin Shinawatra retains a large swell of support in Thailand. Thaksin addressed the crowds via a telephone link in which he said that only a royal pardon or the will of the people could bring him back to Thailand: “No one can bring me back to my homeland except the royal kindness of His Majesty or the people’s power.”
