Thaksin Supporters Hand in Petition for Royal Pardon

Red-shirted supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra have handed in a petition today to request a royal pardon for the former Thai prime minister. An estimated 30,000 red shirts gathered in and around Sanam Luang in Bangkok as the petition was formally handed in to representatives of the Royal Household. Organizers of the petition say over 3 million signatures have been gathered in the campaign to seek a pardon for Thaksin who is currently in exile and faces a 2 year prison sentence if he returns to Thailand.

Speaking from Dubai, Thaksin addressed the crowd to thank them and also to pledge his loyalty to His Majesty the King. Opponents of the red shirts have criticized the pardon campaign calling it inappropriate.
