Potjaman Shinawatra, the wife of deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been arrested on her return to Thailand. The former Prime Minister and his wife face corruption charges relating to real-estate deals and stock market dealings which are alleged to have taken place during Thaksin’s period in power.
The arrest and subsequent release on bail comes as no surprise to any of the parties involved. Thaksin has always stated his intention to return to Thailand when ‘the time is right’ to contest the charges. Some observers believe Thaksin and his wife may be testing the waters following the recent election and setting the ground for Thaksin’s own return to Thailand in the not-too-distant future. Potjaman Shinawatra, respectfully dressed in black to mourn the death of Princess Galyani Vadhana, claims her return was prompted by a desire to pay the Shinawatra’s respects to the late princess.
