Troops Move Against Bangkok Protesters
In the early hours of this morning, Thai military forces advanced on a group of anti-government protesters in Bangkok. At least 70 people have been injured. The action came following Prime Minister Abhisit’s announcement that force would be used if the protesters did not disperse. Abhisit also said that the government has the support of the police and the army and has promised order will be restored within 4 days. Critics of the government are pointing out that the Thai PM also promised that the ASEAN summit in Pattaya would not be disrupted.
Most of the protesters, an estimated 30,000, are based close to Government House in the Dusit district of Bangkok and also in the Victory Monument area.
