Workers at Phuket Hotel End Strike
Hotel employees at the prestigious Laguna resorts in Phuket are reported to have ended their strike action which forced guests to be relocated to other hotels on the island. The protest was in response to the Laguna group’s decision to cut employee bonuses and not pay a wage increase this year.
Many people in Thailand’s tourist industry will be feeling the pressure from the PAD protests of last year which has deterred some visitors from coming to Thailand. Anti-government demonstrations closed Phuket airport in August 2008 and Bangkok’s international airport was closed for a week at the end of last year by more protests. Not surprisingly, this has all led to projections of a huge loss in revenue for Phuket’s tourist industry this year. Sadly for those employed in Thailand’s tourism sector, wage cuts and job losses seem to be an inevitable consequence of last year’s political disputes.
