The next few days (February 10-11) will see celebrations in various parts of Thailand to welcome in the Chinese Lunar New Year. The outgoing year of 2012 was the Year of the Dragon and was considered particularly auspicious. The forthcoming Year of the Snake isn’t considered quite as lucky, but that won’t put too much of a dampener on the traditional festivities that take place in communities all over Thailand from Bangkok to Phuket to Chiang Mai.
According to Chinese astrology, people born in snake years are said to be deep-thinkers, intelligent and organized, but snake years are also supposedly marked by major transformation and change which can sometimes equate to upheaval and strife. For 2013, the snake is associated with the water element and the colour black so may also be referred to as the Year of the Black Water Snake.
