Bangkok Airport Closed
Last night, anti-government protesters forced the closure of Bangkok’s international airport. The chaotic events unfolded after a day of protests from the anti-government PAD group. Protesters switched their focus to Bangkok’s international airport following reports that Prime Minister Somchai was flying in to Suvarnabhumi from an overseas summit in Peru. The PAD group began blocking roads leading to the airport before eventually gaining access to the terminal building. They also claimed to have taken over the control tower.
Although foreign tourists aren’t in physical danger at the airport, it must have been a worrying time for passengers with many probably bewildered and frightened by the chaos. Many stranded passengers have complained about a lack of information from the airlines and airport authorities and it remains unclear when the airport will re-open. The PAD protesters have said they will not vacate the airport until the government step down. The government are to hold an emergency cabinet meeting at an undisclosed location and the leader of the army is also due to make a statement on the situation.
