Flights Resume at Bangkok Airport

Flights have resumed to and from Bangkok’s international airport. Although Suvarnabhumi airport anticipates that most areas will be up and running by tomorrow, there is still a large volume of travellers trying to get in and out of Thailand and it could be another week before airlines can fully clear the backlog.

The airport closures in Bangkok have created a huge dent in Thailand’s economy and adversely affected the country’s reputation and image. Around 60% of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) is generated by exports and 6% comes from tourism. Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport carries 3% of global air freight whilst passenger numbers average around 100,000 a day including many transit passengers. The short-term impact has been immediate, but the long-term effects in Thailand may be business closures and unemployment for many ordinary Thai people.
