Industrial Action Disrupts Train Services

Industrial action taken by railway unions has led to a third consecutive day of disrupted services on Thailand’s rail network. The action, which has resulted in the cancellation of some trains, has mainly affected services to and from the south of Thailand. Rail unions have complained that the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) are forcing rail workers to work with faulty equipment and carry out unsafe working practices. The dispute has come to a head following the recent fatal train accident in Hua Hin. Union officials say one of the factors in that accident was a faulty locomotive. However, State Railway of Thailand have said the accident was caused by human error and have blamed rail staff including the driver and the engineer of the ill-fated train.
