Plane Crash at Koh Samui Airport

A plane has skidded off the runway at Koh Samui airport resulting in the death of the pilot and injuries to a number of passengers. The Bangkok Airways flight had departed from Krabi airport and arrived at Koh Samui approximately 14.00 local time. Heavy rain and a strong cross-wind was reported at the time of the landing as the plane skidded into a building which is used by the fire services at the airport. There are no reports of casualties inside the building and the only confirmed fatality so far is the pilot with the front of the aircraft taking the impact. A total of 72 people were on board the plane.

Koh Samui airport was closed after the accident with stranded passengers being transferred by ferry to the mainland where the next nearest airport to Koh Samui is located at Surat Thani.

Update: A press conference held by Bangkok Airways has confirmed the plane was carrying 68 passengers with 2 pilots and 2 flight attendants. One of the pilot’s has died. Seven passengers have been taken to hospital, 5 with serious injuries and 2 with minor injuries. All of the remaining passengers have been taken to a hotel.
