Protests Called Off and Bangkok Airports to Open Again
The anti-government protesters who have been occupying Bangkok’s two airports for the past week have confirmed they are bringing their protest to an end. The announcement follows today’s judgement by the Constitutional Court which has unseated prime minister Somchai.
The protesters say all demonstrations will end tomorrow, December 3. Airports of Thailand (AOT) must now ensure the international airport at Suvarnabhumi and the domestic airport at Don Muang are safe and secure. It is likely that flights into Bangkok will resume quicker than outbound flights and passengers will still need to be patient and contact their airlines for information.

Please don’t rush to the airport without contacting your airline first. The protesters have not yet cleared away and there is also a lot of resentment from red-shirted pro-government groups angry at today’s ruling and the actions of the PAD protesters at the airports. As such, there is still some potential for clashes between the rival groups. Tourists are advised to exercise caution and keep away from large gatherings or further political demonstrations.
Airport authorities say the airport may not be fully back to normal until December 15, but some passenger flights in and out of Bangkok could resume in the next 24 to 48 hours. Passengers in Thailand are again advised to contact their airlines for details of rescheduled departure dates and times.
The political situation is still far from being resolved, but at least there is the prospect of travellers being able to get in and out of Bangkok airport in the near future.
