Flights to and from U-Tapao Airport
A number of airlines are operating flights in and out of U-Tapao airport which is located approximately 30 minutes to the south-east of Pattaya. Journey time by road from central Bangkok to U-Tapao is approximately 2 hours. U-Tapao is a military airport (close to the naval base at Sattahip) which has been used for a number of years by Bangkok Airways to operate flights to and from Phuket and Ko Samui. It’s fair to say that facilities are basic and it certainly isn’t geared up to cope with the current exceptional circumstances. Nevertheless, for those wishing to get in or out of Thailand it may prove to be a welcome alternative.
Flights to and from Chiang Mai and Phuket
Some airlines are also using Chiang Mai and Phuket international airports to re-route passengers. Facilities at both of these airports are far better than U-Tapao, but they may become crowded under the current situation.
Airline Check-In Facilities at Bangkok Hotels
Some airlines, including Thai Airways, have set up check-in facilities at selected central Bangkok hotels and are then using buses and coaches to transfer passengers to U-Tapao airport. Passengers need to contact their airline in advance to use this facility.
Financial Assistance and Accommodation Help
Thai authorities have made available emergency funds of up to 2,000 Baht per day for passengers stranded by the protests. Details should be available from your embassy or consulate in Bangkok. A list of hotels that the Thai authorities are using to accommodate stranded passengers can also be obtained from your embassy or consulate in Bangkok.
