Commemorative events took place across Thailand yesterday to mark the 60th birthday of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The biggest ceremony took place in Bangkok at Sanam Luang (in front of the Grand Palace) where dignitaries and invited guests lit candles in honour of the Thai princess. Special events were also held in many other towns and cities across Thailand.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was born on a Saturday which is associated with the colour purple. The royal standard of the princess is purple for that reason and many Thai people yesterday wore purple out of respect for the lady many affectionately call ‘Phra Thep‘ (‘Princess Angel’).
In Thailand, the 60th birthday is auspicious because it marks the completion of a 12-year cycle. To mark the anniversary, various special events in honour of the princess are scheduled to take place throughout the year. This includes the issuing of a commemorative 100 Baht note which features the image of the princess in recognition of her service to Thailand and the Thai people.
