A 22-year-old British tourist has been fatally shot at the Full Moon Party on Ko Pha Ngan. Stephen Ashton was struck by a bullet in his side whilst he was celebrating the New Year at the Zoom Bar on Hat Rin Beach in the early hours of this morning. The victim is thought to have been caught in the crossfire following a dispute between two rival Thai gangs which saw one Thai man produce a gun and fire shots at members of the rival gang. Thai police have announced a suspect has been arrested. The UK Foreign Office is providing consular assistance to the family of Stephen Ashton.
The Full Moon parties on Ko Pha Ngan have a chequered reputation. Although thousands attend the event each month with no problems, fatal fights have occurred in the past and the Full Moon Party has earned a reputation for robberies and drug-related crime.
